Easing the Financial Burden on Senior Citizens

FACTS:
One of the myths of aging is that senior citizens no longer contribute to society. Increasingly, however, we find seniors who continue to be outstanding in their career fields, starting new careers, making the world better and improving their mental and physical fitness. Seniors contribute to the strength and diversity of the community. Most states that levy a personal income tax allow people who receive retirement income - social security and pensions - to exclude part of it from their taxable income.

VERMONT:   Only seven states -- California, Connecticut, Indiana, Nebraska, Rhode Island, Vermont and Wisconsin -- do not exclude some amount of retirement income from taxation.

SOLUTION:
Supporting our seniors is the right thing to do. I believe seniors should be able to continue living in Vermont and  not be forced out by ever increasing tax burdens. We need to refine our tax policy to reduce the financial burden on Vermont's low income and middle income senior citizens.
